Oct. 12

This week we have started our flexible groupings for word work. This means that throughout the year, your child may have another Grade 2 teacher other than me for word work times. As a team, we decided that this was one way to meet the varying spelling needs of all of our students. In these groups, your child will be working on skills that are appropriate for him/her such as beginning and ending sounds of a word, short vowels and word families, or long vowels and blends.  We will do activities such as word sorts, games,  and sound hunts.  Ask your child what sounds they are learning about and see if they can find examples of these sounds during your nightly reading.  This is a great way to apply their learning from class into real life situations.

We also started some fall art today. We used the book Fletcher and the Falling Leaves along with some real maple leaves to begin our art project and give us perspective. If you would like to hear the story, click here! We practiced sketching maple leaves by following along with an art video and next we will colouring them using blending techniques. We will eventually use these leaves to make some beautiful artwork for our windows. Check out what we have so far:

We have had a bit of a shift in our day to day schedule, including a morning recess and an afternoon read aloud/snack break.  Your child is welcome to eat for both of these times, so please send snacks based on the needs of your child.

Coming up:
Picture Day Oct. 25. Please send back the bottom of the picture day form that you received today!
