What a wonderful class we have! Each day I notice something new about the students that I find interesting and intriguing. Today I was impressed once again with how welcoming and compassionate this class is.
At the end of the day we had a special guest, Mr. McLellan, come to our class to talk about his class and his students. He teaches the CSSI program at our school for students with autism. He came to talk about the differences and similarities between his class and ours and invited us to become classroom buddies with them. That means that through the year, we will get to read, walk, create, and even bake with our buddies. The response of the classroom was so heartwarming to see. They were so excited that they could see new types of classrooms, see how others learn, and make new friends. We will start this on Tuesday, so be sure to ask your child about buddy time!
In math, we have started a deeper investigation on number concepts and place value. This week, we have focused on writing and recognizing numbers up to 100. We have learned how to use a hundred chart and started to look at the different patterns we notice on the chart - for example " all the 2's are in the line" or "I can find 25 on the 20's row". These are exactly the kinds of observations we want to see! We completed several activities with a hundreds chart, all of which could be replicated at home.
The first was a 100's chart puzzle. To make this you print a 100 chart and cut it up however you want and then put it back together. Here is a link to a 100 chart you could print. 100 chart
The next was a game. We used an empty 100 chart and then filled in the top row to give us some reference. We rolled two 9 sided dice ( a deck of cards without the face cards would also work) and each number represented one digit in a two digit number. Ex: if we rolled an 8 and 5 we would have 85. We then found where this went on our 100 chart.
Last, we did a math puzzler that had pieces taken out of the 100 chart. We needed to find which numbers would go in the empty boxes.
Here is a link to a fun interactive 100 chart that students can use. While using it you could ask your child: show all the numbers with a ____ in the one place or show all the numbers that aren't more than ____.
Have a great weekend!!
